How to remove the challenges of adopting an older dog

“The book is a very informative read for any pet parent looking to adopt and bring home a new family member”

In 2018, I found myself contemplating a critical question:

Adoption. Adopting an older, rehomed dog.
What did I really know about pet parenting a rehomed older dog?

I had already been parent to Blossom for 5 months, and
that itself had been quite a learning curve!
However, in my mind there were 2 main differences that stood out:

  • Blossom had come to me as a young puppy, she
was a female Golden Retriever, known for their
even temperament, and the adjustment period
    had been fairly mellow.
  • I felt like the information available online was
either overly positive or overly negative.

So I decided to list out the clarifications I needed.

My original list included questions like:

  • Training. How different is it for an older, rescued dog?
  • What kind of training might they need?
  • When is the best time to start training a rescue dog?
  • What should I be aware of?
  • Challenges. How can ignorance actually work better for adopting a rescue dog?
  • How can I tell if my rehomed dog is happy?
  • Can I change the name of a rescue dog?
  • Risks. Would I have not made the choice of adopting a rescue dog?
  • Will a rescue dog get along with children?
  • Will they get along with my existing pet dog?
  • Can dogs of opposite genders peacefully coexist in a family?

And then I went about getting answers to as many of these as I could.
Like this informative article about parenting a rescue older dog- my experience!

The research I performed was instrumental in providing a
seamless and enjoyable experience to me training an adopted older dog.
The dog that chose us to be his family.
My rescue dog from a local shelter, Marshal.

This experience inspired me to share my understandings with others.
I want fellow dog parents to have the information and support they need

to establish a strong and special connection with their rescue dogs.

It did not begin as a walk in the park (pun intended!), yet
the rewards of making this choice have been truly worthwhile.

Parenting a rescue older dog is a challenge. This blog, about
what is the hardest part of parenting an older rescue dog is my
personal experience with Marshal and will give you hope and
bring a smile to your face!

I published an ebook!

When Marshal accepted us as his forever family in December 2018, we were in for some💫🚧 myth busting!

🔗Rescue older dogs are set in their ways

Well, Adopted Adult Dogs are no pushovers 😅

Respect their boundaries and work with them patiently.

The big 3 they crave for are: kindness, a meal and a cozy corner to call their own.

🔗Rescue rehomed older dogs don’t get along with children

Mine is a lapdog with my now 9-YO child!

When my child respects his boundaries, there isn’t a happier pupper to be found!

Now, these are just 2 of the many myths we

kept pulling apart like fresh-baked bread🍞

All these lessons are now inside my published eBook you can purchase right here!
